Having that epiphany in the middle of a workout session is even more nerve-wracking. The good news is that after 30 minutes, you’ll be done and on your way out, all the while mentally noting that you should do something else for the next time. But if you experience these emotions while working with a personal trainer, what should you do?
Working one on one with someone comes with significant perks. To help you hone your technique, we’ll give you our undivided attention. Your trainer will hold you accountable for every second you spend with them, and they will teach you skills you might not learn in a group setting. However, there are many trainers out there; how can you choose the best one? And what if you don’t think it’s a great match? The following advice comes from Helene Darmanin, a trained personal trainer, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and student physical therapist.
Inquire about this stuff right away
Feel free to probe your potential trainer to get to know their style. Ask these straight off the bat: How do you approach things in the gym? Tell me about your background. Please tell me about your experience. How can you maintain your place as a leader in the field? “I constantly go to conferences and read current studies to ensure I have the greatest information accessible,” Darmanin explains.
Keep in mind that investing in a trainer requires not just the trainer’s time but also your own. Ask whether they have experience working with people who have a comparable disability or injury to yours or if they are comfortable working with others who have your disability. “I’ve just begun working with a client who suffers from a very unusual inflammatory illness that shares some similarities with rheumatoid arthritis. “I had never heard of the disease before, but I did some research and gained permission to contact my client’s doctor and discuss appropriate measures,” she says. The trainer’s knowledge and ability to do additional study will allow them to meet the needs of the majority of students.
You can anticipate this from your coach
An excellent trainer will consult with you and direct you as you establish objectives. For a first assessment, you can be asked to take a short survey or undergo a series of physical tests. But if you work with your trainer to set reasonable objectives and commit to the program, you should see results.
To advance in training, a competent instructor will also push you to do tricky things for you. You can feel comfortable sharing such information with them if you’re a good fit. Darmanin claims that expanding one’s kinetic horizons, challenging one’s comfort zone, and venturing in novel directions are all positive, rewarding, and necessary steps toward achieving one’s objectives.

You leave each session feeling fulfilled and successful, in whatever sense it may mean to you. Exercise has been proven to provide numerous physical and mental benefits, including releasing those “feel-good” endorphins. Working with a trainer who helps you reach your desired state of happiness increases your likelihood of maintaining it.
Your trainer should accommodate your injury, illness, exhaustion, mood, and other life factors, as well as your requirements and goals. Darmanin creates a practice plan for her clients to follow while they are away on vacation. She may choose whether they should work through a terrible day or relax. “A competent trainer will adapt their program to your current state.”
You’ll know it’s not the right fit if…
Any time you feel uneasy. During training, you should always feel protected and encouraged. Not making any headway or having low self-esteem could be different indicators. If a trainer’s tendency to use negative reinforcement to drive customers appeals to you, then by all means, go with that person. But if not, it’s supposed to be happening differently. You have no reason to feel guilty, harmful, or judged.
Finally, don’t let anyone pressure you into hiring a specific trainer. “Although trainers need to generate revenue, the quality of their services should speak for itself. If you’re uncomfortable with the sales pressure, “simply walk away.”
